    The role of HiPPI switches in mass storage systems: A five year prospective

    New standards are evolving which provide the foundation for multi-gigabit per second data communication structures. The lowest layer protocols are so generalized that they encourage a wide range of application. Specifically, the ANSI High Performance Parallel Interface (HiPPI) is being applied to computer peripheral attachment as well as general data communication networks. The HiPPI Standards suite and technology products which incorporate the standards are introduced. The use of simple HiPPI crosspoint switches to build potentially complex extended 'fabrics' is discussed in detail. Several near term applications of the HiPPI technology are briefly described with additional attention to storage systems. Finally, some related standards are mentioned which may further expand the concepts above

    On the parametric dependences of a class of non-linear singular maps

    We discuss a two-parameter family of maps that generalize piecewise linear, expanding maps of the circle. One parameter measures the effect of a non-linearity which bends the branches of the linear map. The second parameter rotates points by a fixed angle. For small values of the nonlinearity parameter, we compute the invariant measure and show that it has a singular density to first order in the nonlinearity parameter. Its Fourier modes have forms similar to the Weierstrass function. We discuss the consequences of this singularity on the Lyapunov exponents and on the transport properties of the corresponding multibaker map.     The Saint Petersburg Society of Naturalists has reinstated the Alexander O. Kowalevsky Medal. This article announces the winners of the first medals and briefly reviews the achievements of A.O. Kowalevsky,the Russian comparative embryologist whose studies on amphioxus, tunicates and germ layer homologies pioneered evolutionary embryology and confirmed the evolutionary continuity between invertebrates and vertebrates. In re-establishing this international award, the Society is pleased to recognize both the present awardees and the memory of Kowalevsky, whose work pointed to that we now call evolutionary developmental biology

    Fractal Dimensions of the Hydrodynamic Modes of Diffusion

    We consider the time-dependent statistical distributions of diffusive processes in relaxation to a stationary state for simple, two dimensional chaotic models based upon random walks on a line. We show that the cumulative functions of the hydrodynamic modes of diffusion form fractal curves in the complex plane, with a Hausdorff dimension larger than one. In the limit of vanishing wavenumber, we derive a simple expression of the diffusion coefficient in terms of this Hausdorff dimension and the positive Lyapunov exponent of the chaotic model.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Nonlinearit

    Emotional perception as a component of emotional intelligence: its role in academic achievement, social interaction, and focus of attention

    The ability to perceive emotion in others has been proposed as an important component of emotional intelligence (EI). Indeed, perhaps the only independent aspect of EI which is not simply a manifestation of personality or cognitive ability. Indeed, perhaps the only independent aspect of EI which is not simply a manifestation of personality or cognitive ability. This thesis investigates the status of emotional perception (EP) within the EI framework. Chapter 1 discusses a number of controversies within the EI literature and identifies EP as the most important aspect of EI. Chapter 2 describes the difficulties with the measurement of EP and evaluates its potential theoretical contributions. It then reports the development and validation of a scale designed to measure EP. Successive Chapters investigate the influence of EP in three main theoretical areas. First, the role of EP in academic performance and its potential longitudinal effects are evaluated in two longitudinal studies. EP is compared with scales measuring other aspects of EI, a personality inventory, a measure of cognitive ability, a well-being scale and a coping scale in order to assess the reliability and validity of the measures, and to evaluate their intercorrelations. Additionally, the relationship between EP and various types of academic achievement is explored in order to assess the predictive validity of EP. Second, a quasi-experimental design is employed in order to investigate the role of EP in social interaction. The experience of embarrassment when delivering class presentations is used to investigate these effects. Third, a series of experimental studies, using the attentional bias framework, consider the effects of EP on the focus of attention to emotionally meaningful stimuli. The thesis presents evidence to suggest that EP is a semi-independent construct within EI. It can be assessed reliably, demonstrates validity, is a practically useful construct, and influences moment-by-moment regulation of behaviour

    Field Driven Thermostated System : A Non-Linear Multi-Baker Map

    In this paper, we discuss a simple model for a field driven, thermostated random walk that is constructed by a suitable generalization of a multi-baker map. The map is a usual multi-baker, but perturbed by a thermostated external field that has many of the properties of the fields used in systems with Gaussian thermostats. For small values of the driving field, the map is hyperbolic and has a unique SRB measure that we solve analytically to first order in the field parameter. We then compute the positive and negative Lyapunov exponents to second order and discuss their relation to the transport properties. For higher values of the parameter, this system becomes non-hyperbolic and posseses an attractive fixed point.Comment: 6 pages + 5 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.
